The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation will hold a Safe Routes to School Conversation specifically for East Portland at Midland Library on Tuesday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m.
"Join this Safe Routes to School workshop to share ideas about increasing walking and biking to school in East Portland, talk about challenges, ask questions, brainstorm solutions and meet your neighbors."
Dinner and child care will be provided, but please RSVP to Carolina Iraheta at carolinairaheta@portlandoregon.gov or (503) 823-1189. Language translation can also be provided upon request.
Parkrose Cooperative Parish, a joint venture between Parkrose United Methodist Church and Parkrose Community United Church of Christ (both at 11111 NE Knott St.), has recently opened a Food Pantry, for anyone who is in need of food. The Food Pantry will be open Tuesdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Donations to the Food Pantry are welcomed on Sunday mornings.
The parish has also been holding monthly community dinners since October. The next dinner will be Wednesday, January 26 at 6:00 p.m., and they'll continue...
David Douglas's boys' varsity basketball team may just give Central Catholic a run for their money in the Mt. Hood Conference this year. Nick Daschel takes a look at the Scots' strengths over at the Oregonian. The Scots play Putnam on Thursday, December 16.
Meanwhile, the girls' varsity is 2-3 in pre-season play; the lady Scots won their most recent game against McKay. They play North Salem on Friday, December 17.

This evening, Monday December 6, 2010 at approximately 8:27 p.m., Portland Police officers responded to the area of Northeast 117th Avenue and San Rafael Street on numerous reports of shots fired. An additional call came in from a residence located in the 2100 block of Northeast 117th Avenue and the caller told police that a male at the house had been shot.

Parkrose United Methodist Church and Parkrose United Church of Christ will host their second free community dinner on Thursday, November 4 at 6:00 p.m. The dinner is open to everyone; there will be activities available for children.
This month's dinner will be a baked potato bar! There will be a puppet show and puppet workshop following dinner.
Parkrose United Methodist Church is located at 11111 NE Knott Street. The dinner will be in Miller Hall.
Around 8:30 this evening, Portland Police responded to a report of a stabbing on the bike path near Gateway Transit Center. They located a 40-year-old man with stab wound on the bike path north of the transit center, and transported him by police car to NE 102nd and Fremont. His wound was non-life-threatening, and he was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.
Police did not have any suspect information available, but will be investigating the incident. Anyone with information about this stabbing should call Portland Police at (503) 823-3333.
Governors Chris Christie (New Jersey) and Haley Barbour (Mississippi) will stop by Parkrose High School on Saturday, October 30 to campaign for gubernatorial candidate Chris Dudley.
The event begins at 8:00 a.m. Doors open at 7:00 a.m. The campaign is requesting RSVPs on the campaign website.
A new Homeless Family Warming Center will open November 1st at Eastminster Presbyterian Church (12505 NE Halsey Street). 60 beds will be available for families with children, starting at 7:00 each evening. The center will remain open through March 31, 2011 (or longer if funding permits).
Human Solutions, Inc. is offering the warming center in partnership with Eastminster Presbyterian. Human Solutions will also offer housing and employment services to families using the center as well....

September 18 - Prescription Drug Turn-In, hosted by the Portland Police Bureau. Bring any unused prescription medications to Gateway Fred Meyer (1111 NE 102nd Avenue) on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Mobile Precinct will be there to dispose of medications safely, securely and anonymously.

Parkrose lost its first league football game to Liberty High School, 40-13. The first home game is Friday, September 17 against Putnam.

One last reminder: David Douglas students return to school Tuesday, September 7. Parkrose students return on Wednesday, September 8 (which is also an early release day). In both areas, please remember to observe school zone speed limits (usually 20 mph).
High school football teams began pre-season games on Friday, September 3. David Douglas lost to Forest Grove, 14-0, while Parkrose won against Dallas High School, 39-29. This Friday, September 10, David Douglas will play at Oregon City, and Parkrose will be at Liberty....
Parkrose Farmers' Market is open at Parkrose High School every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through the end of October. In addition, the market is now offering a Sunday Edition from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at NE 136th and Sandy Boulevard.
Montavilla Farmers' Market is open in the 7600 block of SE Stark on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through October 31. They'll also be open the weekend before Thanksgiving for holiday shoppers.

Remember that while David Douglas starts school on Tuesday, September 7, Parkrose schools won't start until September 8. September 7 is a district-wide furlough day for Parkrose; all campuses and the district office will be closed.

The Parkrose Summer Bash is a free event coordinated by a coalition of area churches. It's being held Saturday, August 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Parkrose High School, in conjunction with the Parkrose Farmers' Market.
They'll have live entertainment, activities for kids (including inflatables!) and more. This event is also a food drive -- organizers hope to collect 35,000 pounds or more of non-perishable food for CityTeam Ministries and Shepherd's Door. And the Red Cross will be there for a blood drive....

Just like other districts in Oregon, Parkrose School District has had to make additional budget cuts over the summer. The district had already cut the equivalent of ten full-time teacher positions, along with other adjustments, before Governor Kulongoski announced another nine percent cut in school funding.
To balance the budget, the district and the Parkrose Faculty Association agreed to cut days from the 2010-2011 school calendar. Four student days have been eliminated, along with two teacher work days. Teachers have...
Many neighborhood associations are celebrating National Night Out this week. National Night Out is intended as a crime prevention event (take back our neighborhoods!), but it's really a time for the community to gather together and have fun! National Night Out is officially on August 3rd, but some events are held on different dates. Here are two in the Parkrose/Gateway area:

UPDATE: Parker returned to his home late Sunday evening, July 24. According to police, he called his mother around 10:00 p.m. and police picked him up from a Portland location and took him to his home.

Earlier this year, Governor Kulongoski instructed school districts to expect an additional nine percent reduction in monies received from the State of Oregon. This was part of an across-the-board nine percent reduction in the state budget.
